Previously I had a refrigerator. When I was first married they
were about, but previously to that of course my mother had no refrigerator, and
it was just what was called the safe, which was a box which hung in the coolest
place in the garden on the north side, with a grid, a sort of galvanised
pinpointed grid to let the air in at the sides of it and you kept things as
cool as possible. But of course you didn't keep them much more than
overnight.
