The House
Glenda Parsley recounts in her interview how she and her
husband Deryk were looking for a place to live, just prior to their marriage in
1959. They wanted to live somewhere close to Deryk's place of work- which was
at the time The Central Cafe in Red Lion Square. Through the grapevine Glenda
and Deryk were told of an old house that was up for rent, it was Number 16,
Barn Hill, Stamford. The owner was a Miss Young, whose family owned a string of
shops in Stamford. Deryk and Glenda were successful in their application and
three days after their honeymoon they moved in. Glenda has now been there for
42 years. Glenda Parsley said that both she and her husband were astonished at
their good luck, to be moving into a 15th century priest's house. The house was
initially gloomy, with lots of black paint throughout. The kitchen, was
particularly old fashioned with a range and a copper boiler. She says:

"Well, it
was very funny because, when I think back it was Molly Aires who used to have a
gentleman's outfitters in Stamford. She was down the George talking to someone-
and they heard that Mr Baldwin was leaving here, and she came and told us, she
knew we were looking for a house and she came and told us it was coming up for
rent- and so we went to see Miss Young who owned it and that was how we got
here. We only knew Miss Young and didn't know any of the other family- just
Miss Young, and she was such a nice lady and she loved this house and she, you
know wouldn't sell it, she just wanted to rent it to us, and we were very lucky
to get it- you know."
