"The computer is having and will have a bigger impact than atomic energy...It is having a deeper effect on us because it seems to penetrate everywhere at every level. It penetrates social activity, political activity, the way people are thinking. Its hard to think of any aspect of our lives that are not significantly influenced." (May, K. O., 1980).

Over the centuries many people invented machines to carry out a task that they commanded. In 1642 Blaise Pascal created the wheel calculator to aid his father with his tax collecting duties, Herman Hollerith in 1889 produced a machine to compute the USA census more rapidly. The origins of computing came from a human wanting of information to be calculated with accuracy, speed and efficiency. Since these early developments we have seen the production of mainframes, personal computers and the creation of both the hardware and software industries globally.
