"Smaller houses where the kitchen was also the dining room and sitting room, food preparation and cooking conjured up the notion of home for millions of people. Kitchen ranges became widespread by the end of the 19th century, boasting a fire, ovens and hobs. Some cooking was still done outside the house and due to the cost of coal, Sunday joints might be given to the baker to cook." Planel: 2000:31

The kitchen is often considered to be one of the main focal points to a home; it is sometimes referred to as the heart of a home. The kitchen is a social space where families gather to cook, eat and chat, and it is also probably deemed to be one of the most informal communal as well as private areas of a house.

The development of the kitchen is an interesting story - from the purely practical and uncomfortable to the now modern aesthetic and design oriented room. Today the kitchen has extended its primary function and has become in essence a "living" room, where not only is food prepared and eaten, but television watched, radio listened to, laundry washed and telephone calls made. It is a truly multipurpose room.
