Click here to listenWhat did the kettle look like?

The kettle was one which would stand on the gas stove or on the hob in front of the fire and that would have been a metal which I presume was tin. That used to be put in front of the fire because it was always an open fire which brought it up to simmering point so you did not use so much gas when you put it up to the boil for making tea.

The singing sound was always very welcome if we had been out for a walk after Sunday dinner for example and left the kettle on the hob in front of the fire and it was generally singing when we came home - that's a home memory certainly.

Click here to listenWould you be allowed to use that? Who actually used the kettle?

I can't remember ever being allowed to make tea or pick the kettle up which I must have done as I got older but certainly not as a childhood memory.
