Did you knit? Yes, I learned to knit as a child, not very successfully, but I
did a lot of knitting when I was older. All the children's clothes - all the
baby's clothes were hand knit, with very fine wool. The little vests and all
those things were all hand knitted, and then of course you made their little
leggings and suits. Everything was hand made in pure wool-pure wool. Yes, not
dark colours like they have today - pretty delicate colours that I think suit
babies. They were bone needles mainly...I used to buy patterns, a lot of
magazines used to have patterns in them. I knitted for myself too, when I was
at business. I always took knitting to do in the trains on the way to London. I
knitted for the children and for my husband - when he came home after the war.
I knitted him pullovers and things like that. During the war you'd undo things
and wash the wool and knit it into something else. The young women with nothing
to do knitted for the troops. I was kept pretty busy.
