Q. So you must have noticed a big difference?

A. Yes, indeed. I can always remember, as I say at Finchley a press run would take two days. At the Thurrock Gazette that I was posted to at Grays I think their print run for 25,000 copies was two hours and I can always remember that the papers would be sent down from Southend, where they were printed to Grays, and one afternoon they were seriously delayed and it was because the owner had spotted that there was an advertisement for a dairy firm juxtaposed against a story of a dairy firm that had been to court, and he ruled immediately that this was likely to be libelous.

He ordered the whole edition to be scrapped and they printed them again without that juxtaposition so the papers arrived five hours late but they were then safe. The whole of the edition was scrapped.
