Peter Owen went into the newspaper industry upon leaving school at 16. He went to work as a junior reporter on the Finchley Press, as he had previously been persuaded to go into journalism by his school teacher who said to him that his writing set him out as a possible journalist. He wrote for the paper for the "princely sum of 13s 6d".
