Peter first started at Grays
in 1951and was there until 1958, when he moved to Romford to become the
chief reporter of the Romford Times. He remained there for 14 years during
which time he became editor and subsequently group editor together with
the Stratford Express. These papers were published at a huge printing
press in Stratford. This newspaper organisation printed only two newspapers
a week, the Romford Times was printed on a Tuesday evening and the Stratford
Express on a Thursday afternoon- the total number of papers being 100,000.
The press though was only used for a total of six hours a week. Peter
mentions how this situation must have made any business man wince at the
amount of capital lying idle.
