New technology existed in the editorial department as the journalists could begin to type words into their keyboards which would be sent directly to the technology in the printing departments. A huge battery of men was not needed to produce something a few could do with the new technology on offer. Peter can remember a time when a department made up of 56 people was reduced to 8 staff, because of the introduction of the technology.
