Now that had started in 1969 with a degree of new technology in that instead of having hot metal it used web fed offset lithography and this was where the journalist's work was then keyboarded by a battery of men and it came out as punched tape, which was then fed into another machine, and this machine then spewed out typed material of the sort that would actually appear in the paper.

It was cut up and pasted on to sheets of paper. But of course that was a change in technology, a considerable change in technology, and web offset lithography had appeared in a number of papers throughout the country, a number of organisations, particularly the provincial press because it made financial sense. But the big stumbling block was, remained there. Here was reporter's work changed by sub-editors, scribbled on and sent down to be re-keyboarded by a group of men who had to belong to a union of course. This was realised way back that it didn't make any sense at all.
