The Summer of 1943...

1943 was a good summer and we spent a lot of off duty time on the beach in fact sometimes all off duty WAAF, RAF and the WAAF admin officer and hostel took a picnic of sandwiches, lemonade, cake etc. and a gramophone to the beach for the afternoon and evening.

There was a large garden at the hostel and all WAAF and RAF had to do two hours gardening a week. Apart from flowers a good crop of summer vegetables were grown for use in the hostel- the food was good.

Sunday evenings were often party nights and several of the Canadian mechanics organised soft ball matches in the summer. We also had a hockey and cricket team. There were compulsory discussion groups on such subjects as "Government Control and Private Enterprise" these usually caused long arguments.
