Technical Lectures and The Watch...

Technical lectures by a RAF Sgt or Cpt Mechanic were given to duty personnel twice a week as the hostel the lectures also included 1st Aid, fire and anti-gas. The watch system varied depending on the number of staff available (4 watch, 1-6, 8-1, 11-8, 6-11 and day off) or three watch without the day off.

Remembering the technical lectures

The ops site was on a 750 foot hill above the town and we were taken up by transport from the hostel for night watch, but from the town on day shifts. We had to walk up for pay parades and if the transport broke down it was a very steep path.

Phyllis remembers the doors being locked to the ops site

Sheep grazed on the hillside both inside and outside of the radar compound and I often stumbled over a resting sheep on dark or foggy nights when walking from the guard room to ops block.
