During the Second World War the Midland Woodworking Company was taken over by Boulton and Paul of Norwich. As Wally explains, manufacturing change at the factory to enable glider noses, prefabricated huts and bunk beds for the army to be made so the company could support the war effort.

When Wally 18 he left the Midland Woodworking Company to join the RAF as a driver. In 1946 he returned to the company as a joiner and went back to window production.

Wally comes back to MidWood after the war

After the war, production at MidWood had changed. In 1948 the machines from the factory were moved to Lowerstoft. The work that was now less specialised / custom built. The components were now made at Lowerstoft and transported every night to MidWood in Lorries.

Wally remembers that the machines were moved to Lowerstoft

Often the joiners at MidWood, would be waiting for components to be delivered from Lowerstoft
