Farming was traditionally
a very labour intensive process. Even at the beginning of the 20th century,
over 30% of the population was directly concerned with agricultural production.
Today, less than 1% of the population work on the land. Gradually, more
and more complex machines have been developed that do all of the tasks
that would have once been done manually.
Many of the ancient
traditional methods were still just about in use in the 1930's
