This northeast
corner of Leicestershire was noted in the middle Ages for its woods and
for hunting. The best Fox Hounds were traditionally bred in this corner
of England. Melton Mowbray is an ancient agricultural centre and was recorded
in the Doomsday Book [1086] as Leicestershire's only market town.
Today, Melton
Mowbray remains an attractive medieval market town set in a gentle, rolling
landscape. The town's community has always had an intimate relationship
with the surrounding villages and the people. There has been a Tuesday
market in the town ever since 1324. The local farm produce is still sold
there today.
