We've got what we call
the first fixing when the carpenter would come along then and put
the door linings in ... his purpose of putting the door linings
in at this stage was so the plasterer had somewhere to finish his
plaster to a nice straight line you see. And then there would be
the first fixing for the electrician he would have wiring to go
in and for a good job they would be chased into the brickwork. a
cheaper job would be just channels as it is done today, just channeling
over the wires. And of course the plumber would have to come in
and get his pipework in first, under the floors before the floors
went down. And then of course the first floor boardings went down.

Once all the plastering
was done, then would came what was called the second fixing. The
carpenter would come back again and he would have the doors to hang
and the locks and latches put on, the architraves round the door
lining and skirting boards, to go in and he would finish with his
hand rail and his staircase and all that sort of thing.
