Anthony Dorey: Transition

"Welding came in really during the war and of course that's a big technological advance that tends to get forgotten these days. But I mean, before the Second World War virtually all ships were riveted. After the war ships gradually move - and I saw that during my time - ships move from being part-welded, part-riveted to being all-welded. But it moved very slowly. Over about a decade from welding coming in to ships being all welded took about 10-15 years."
