Helen Grant Hoey (née Radford) was a Wren who served in the Fleet Air Arm service during the Second World War. Early in 1940, when Helen was too young to volunteer for the WRNS she applied to the Engineering Training Centre in Leeds to qualify as a precision fitter and to be employed as the first female in this department. In 1943 when Helen had reached the age of 18 she applied to join the WRNS. Her written and oral accounts recollect her personal experiences of living and working as a Wren during the war.
