William Brown Edwards had it from 1825 to 1857, and then a Mr Frederick George Phillips took over the lease, and he had it for two year, they had a problem with marketing the beer- in competition with the other three established breweries and he had it for two year and then came along Mr Elmer Brown in 1859 and he had it for ten years until 1869. In 1869 there was a lot of government regulations over brewing and licensing and taxing of beer and a lot of people that used to brew their own went out of brewing because they were starting to be taxed so Elmer Brown decided that he had, had enough and along came Herbert Wells Melbourn, 1869, October 1869 and he took over the lease and it was him that was responsible for building the brewery up as it is today.
