The entrance has changed, in 1864- on All Saints' Street, if you look at the old town maps you'll see it was a solid block of buildings on the street and in 1864 the entrance-or until 1864 was off Scott gate, it came round the back of brewery house and that way- and in 1864 they closed the building down, which was a public house called the Salutation Arms, they closed that down, demolished the building and made the entrance in to the brewery off of All Saints' Street. This made a big difference- to be able to get into the property and out of the property, as the Scott Gate was very narrow at that time, and also there was a problem with the layout- there was a different elevation, they had to come down about a dozen steps, so it meant bringing everything down steps or trundling it down- the barrels down on beams

It was good when they got this different entrance as they got everything- and was on a level- then so it saves a lot of work and there was one lady who got killed by the barrels, rolling the barrels down, she got crushed and died, there have been a few accidents in the brewery, but I suppose there will be in any place where people work. The oldest building on the place was a barn, it's listed on the old town map, the oldest town hall map- and that was turned into a working brewery on a very small scale by the first owners and over the years it's been altered and along when Mr Melbourn started he spent an awful lot of money from about 1895-96 to bring the brewery up to what it is today.
