Joan Jalland

Mrs. Jalland grew up in the town of Solothurn, near Berne, Switzerland. Her father was a glazier, and her earliest memories of washing clothes at home are of how stressful the "big" washday, which occurred once a month, was for the entire family, who lived on the first floor flat of a three-storied town house. Joan was the youngest of three sisters, and the washroom in the building was located, as was customary, in the attic.
