I'm afraid I can't remember exactly how long it took, but it seemed to take most of the time in the morning - and then came the rinsing - after the first initial soap suds had been rinsed out of the water, for special items they used a thing called a dolly bag which was some dye in a little muslin bag and they made the water - came up blue, you put the washing in there and the effect was that - to get the washing extra white.
