Oh, no.

So it all stayed very basic?

Yes, because I was...for most of the time until 1935 and my duties were spread between six in the morning and eight at night and then I wanted to get out of it and I did about four years study and so I went onto night duty so that I would have time to study.

Well it kept going, but as much as I could, I'd be out in the country 'cos we, a friend of mine Tommy Atkins and myself we rented a country cottage at Forest Green about nine miles past Dorking, about five shillings a week from the old farmer and my garden down there took over from the one in West Ham.

Ah, so you had another garden?

Because down there you could grow potatoes and all sorts of vegetables.
