Oh yes, sticks of rhubarb about three feet long.

So they became part of the household economy?

Yes, yes, because there the farmyard manure was available to me, that made a colossal difference, and also the old farmer was employed during the winter time clearing all the leaves off the roads, so there was a marvelous supply of leafmould, which was brilliant.

Actually, I'd carry as much as I could home on the bicycle in the way of leafmould, two or three times a year and use that to grow my seeds in - it was an immense improvement.
