Oh yes, I went onto Systemic, Murphy's for greenfly at that time. And I used Systemic because before then I sprayed normally - but I went to Systemic and found that I could water it straight into the ground and the bees and so on weren't killed, I don't know, if you know, the Systemic - I don't know why they cut some of them out. The plant takes it up and the blackfly and the greenfly go onto the leaves and just die. I had two allotments there too, and my broad beans used to be lovely and clear about the only set clear because of watering this Systemic killer straight into the ground.

Improved quality as I got on - and when I graduated to two allotments and coming home after a day's work, I bought a rotary mower and what do you call it - it's more or less like a small plough with a petrol engine. In half an hour you'd dig both allotments in winter.

Can you remember what that looked like and felt like? Was it easy to use?

Oh yes, it cost about £150 pounds and I think all you did was switch the motor on, press the starting handle and away she goes as long as you kept the handles down - it just went through the ground.
