Basildon's Talking Newspaper

Gwen Johns

Gwen Johns a resident of Basildon in Essex, is a recipient of the Talking Newspaper. She lost her sight twenty years ago and is a founder member along with Freda Hussey of the Basildon Talking Newspaper.

Before the Talking Newspaper had been set up in Basildon, Gwen used to find out the local news through her daughter who would read the local paper to her. Gwen then decided that she would like to hear local news and set about investigating Talking Newspapers. Gwen contacted a local councillor and they started the process by placing an advertisement, asking people for help, and that is where Freda and Gwen first met, and Freda ended up being the first editor of the paper.
