With the typical immodesty that most journalists have, you think you're kingpin of the newspapers. You may be providing the words and music but in fact the highly paid people were downstairs in the production department, screwing every pound that they could get out of the employers.

And of course the employers themselves, national newspaper employers themselves, were to blame for their own downfall in that respect because they couldn't afford to allow their publication not to appear for one day, because the others would gobble up the circulation.

It was an interesting time and the Newspapers Proprietors' Association, that's the organisation responsible for publishing national newspapers, got together and had a pact that they wouldn't take advantage of another paper's downfall if because of union action they were prevented from publication.
