The downfall of the newspaper industry arose partly out of antagonism between the printer's union and the journalists, as well as the owners of the newspapers. The competition between rival newspapers was such that circulation became all important. Union action may have halted proceedings and if this happened the publication couldn't happen and newspapers lost their readers.
