Newspapers were still proofing
up until the 1980s, and Peter remembers that at the Telegraph pages were
still being proofed in this way. Peter recounts that if a journalist had
touched the galley proofing machine the place would have been brought
to a standstill. He remembers a time when he was working on the local
evening paper in the 1970s when he came down to the printing department
looking for proofs, he thumbed through the printer's pile of papers at
the exact moment when the printers were coming out of a union meeting.
Peter was spotted touching the equipment and the paper was almost stopped
because of this.
