Taking a print involved using a galley of type- which was a metal tray with the linotype set within it-- locked in so that it wouldn't fall over. A roller would be inked up- rolled over the type and a clean sheet of paper would be placed on the type and a bigger roller would be pushed along- applying enough pressure to transfer the print evenly on to the paper.
