Peter remembers that the "whistle
was blown" one Saturday- and questions whether the dispute had been
engineered. The Unions of the News of the World said that they were not
going to accept this change and introduction of new technology and were
going to walk out. So the management instead of prompting a negotiation
agreed to this walkout and the men never did return to work. Rupert Murdoch
had already got the Wapping Press Unit up and running and the paper was
produced without the printers. Street violence followed the departure
and demise of the printers and this new technological environment changed
everyone and everything for good, Peter recounts that it was a domino
effect around the country- very dramatic and very quick.
