The changes in technology were most evident during the 1980s at a time when Eddie Shah who'd been producing papers by modern technology threatened to produce a national paper called "Today". Peter remembers that as far as the unions were concerned their jobs were in danger even though they had been told otherwise. Rupert Murdoch at this time had just build a huge technological printing press and newspaper production unit in Wapping--manned not by printers but by people who were computer technologists who were ready to take over at the "drop of a hat as soon as the whistle had been blown."
