The History
The Talking Newspaper Association of the UK (TNAUK) was founded in 1974. It aimed to bring all local Talking Newspaper groups together. Ronald Sturt created one of the first in 1969 at the College of Librarianship, Aberystwyth in Wales. There are now some 530 Talking Newspaper groups with an estimated 250,000 people kept in contact with local news. The TNAUK also runs a national service with membership of around 17,000 and currently distributes around 6,000 audio cassette tapes a day, which involves over 180 publications. By the end of 1995 the Talking Newspaper Association began to distribute electronic publications, under the direction of the vice president Ted Davis. Growth has been rapid with over 50 newspapers and magazines now available as e-texts. These are distributed via computer disc, email or retrieved from a bulletin board. On average about 900 discs a week are dispatched to around 500 users and more than 100 people receive publications by email and 130 access by disc. For publications in both tape and electronic form the circulation ratio is running at about 10 to 1.
