Foundations
and Footings

All the digging
of the foundations, was all done by hand. well first of all you'd
take off the topsoil off the overside, right over, and then you would
set out for trenches, all by hand. |

Materials
Foundations
are usually made of concrete. David says that this used to
be mixed by hand. Nowadays, of course, it is generally done
using a machine.

The footings as we called
them... the footings were to be in brickwork you see and up to floor
level which was always at about ground level of course, at a level
line. And that would stay at that level and then you would fill
all the inside in with hardcore, whatever hardcore you could get
hold of at the time.
