Building the Walls

Inside walls went up first you see, always with common brick, and then the face went up, with pull ties through you see, and the two inch cavity, and then of course at this time - very early on and after the war there were still builders building with a nine inch solid wall - no cavity - its hard to believe but its so, but i didn't experience it no. But you build up to the ceiling height and the floor joists go on, the carpenter would then come in to do the floor joist and set them out, and then there would be the stairwell to trim.

At this stage there would be scaffolding going on, that will be outside you see, and that took us up to window height and then the brick layer and his mates they would put scaffold up as they went along. As the job progressed up so they would put an extra lift on.

It was always bricks at that time, common brick on the inside and facing brick on the outside. Low cost job, there was even common brick on the outside.
