The Lounge

The original beams in the living room revealed by Deryk

The House

At the beginning of its life the house was a medieval hall house with a timber framed screens passage- traces of this can be seen in the present dining room, which was probably once the kitchen. The first floor may have been inserted in the late 16th century and the stone hearth in the main sitting room and the chimney stack were possibly put in at the same time. The tall relieving arch above the fireplace would have been an opening into the old kitchen.

After they had been in residence for about ten years, Miss Young died, and they were able at last to buy their house, and do some restoration work. The kitchen was modernised, and another bedroom and bathroom added upstairs. Careful work was done by Deryk, to restore the beams in the sitting room, which were covered with plaster. These now match the beams in the hall and priest's room. Glenda also described how Deryk had also taken out the modern fireplace in the sitting room to reveal what is thought to be the original stone fireplace. This was put in when the stone staircase, leading from the priest's room to the upstairs bedroom was built in the 16th century.
