The Extraction

The manner in which the clay is extracted and transported to the brick works depends on the type and depth of the clay deposit and distance from the brick works the deposit is. Some company's still excavate by hand, whilst others use small digging machines. The clay is then transported to the brick works via rail or lorry, and is then made ready for the moulding stage.

The Preparation

The preparation of the raw materials requires the clay to be crushed, ground and mixed in different ways, depending on its nature and subsequent shaping process to be employed. Water content is carefully monitored to keep the clay ready for shaping. The moistness of clay can vary from very wet (over 30% moisture) to relatively dry (under 12% moisture).
