They kept two shire horses right up until the brewery closed in 1974, but they was only used for delivering in the town and were more for show than for anything else. They in the old days- they would take the beer and put it onto the trains at the station - I'm going back now to the 1880s-1890s... Mr Melbourn was a forward thinking man and he realised that he needed outlets for his beer, so he opened a depot in Leicester and one in Grantham and one in Lincoln and would take the horses, the drays- would take the barrels down to the station and off they would go to their depots

A horse could do- could take the barrels out to the pubs and could do about 14 mile out and 14 mile back in a working day and when you look at the public houses that Melbourn decided to buy or lease they were all within that sort of radius of Stamford

He bought his first lorry in 1933 and we haven't got any pictures and we don't even know what sort of lorry it was. All we know is that he purchased a lorry and they had one lorry all the time, and then from there they used to deliver to the more distant public houses, but they kept the two shire horses for delivering in the town
