Click here to listenDid you take an interest in the cooking of these vegetables and fruit at that time?

Oh, no.

Your interest in cooking came later?

I cooked, I had to because if I was up at six o'clock in the morning I had to cook my own breakfast. But I got up at five in the morning, I had to be in London by six.

Well, yes, I had the fork, spade, hoe rake - that's all I needed. I began digging the plot, this is true - old Joe Berry came along, he said - "That's no way to dig Mr. Matthews - let me show you how to." He took all the backbreaking part out of it, he showed me how to dig properly.

So you had lessons?

That was using a spade, not a fork so you put the spade in one side, put in the front and took up that row, turned it over one spade length away - it made an amazing difference, you got through it very quickly and it looked nearly as good as Joe could do it.
