Click here to listenWhen did you get married?

Oh no, that was later in 1947.

So then you bought your own home?

Yes, well we had a flat for the first year, it was very difficult in those days. I had a brother-in-law who was quite well off, he manufactured ties, had his own business in the West End and he bought a house for my sister to live in because she had a husband and one child, and were living with them - they had a large house in Leytonstone. This was a big house, more than...one of those old Victorian houses in Romford Road Manor Park. So as we were getting married my sister gave us first choice and we had part of it as out home for the first year.

So we started searching for a place, and we moved to Northolt.

So, what sort of garden did you have at Northolt?

Very big, about ninety feet wide and one hundred foot long, there were apple trees, Cox's apples, Blenheim orange, Comice pear, William pear and huge conference pear, and a gooseberry bush which I disposed of because Joyce hated gooseberries, a blacurrant, loganberry and raspberries.
