60 Group RAF were based at Leighton Buzzard and were made responsible
for all ground-based Radar coordination. Whilst many of the installations
had been protected with blast defences it was only a matter of time
before the Germans attacked these installations. On that morning Rye,
Pevensey and Dunkirk (Kent) were all attacked. In the afternoon it
was the turn of Ventnor on the Isle of Wight. This was the only station
that was put out of action for any serious length of time.
More raids were expected to follow but they did not come. Field
Marshall Goering had not been convinced that radar was of any great
significance and would not sanction any more raids against these
stations.
