Making the Tapes...

The Basildon Talking Newspaper Committee started with a copier which could copy just two tapes at a time which was quite a time consuming task when their listener numbers multiplied. Later when they could afford a larger machine four tapes could be copied from the master tape in a few minutes. Volunteers would usually fulfill this role and someone else would place the tapes into free-post wallets ready for the GPO to collect. These wallets had been returned from the previous week and the tapes had been taken out and put into the tape cleaning machine ready for reuse.
